Bogart, or Bogie for short, was an unwanted tom turkey. He initially found sanctuary with our wonderful neighbor, Animal Place, but he just wasn’t fitting in. Continually picking fights with the more mellow turkeys and chickens at Animal Place, we welcome Bogart to the CAPE Animal Sanctuary for a fresh start.
Without other turkeys to compete with, Bogart has settled in very well to his new life. He happily shares a stall with Howard during the nights and spends his days being the king of the barn, often seen hanging out with the once feral cats and squirrel visitors.
Bogart lived many years and grew quite old at the CAPE Animal Sanctuary. He sadly passed in 2020.
Why does CAPE rescue Turkeys?
• Turkeys are sentient beings. • Nine billion chickens are raised for the food industry each year. • Baby female chicks are slated for the egg industry. They will live in cramped cages under horrid conditions until they are sent to slaughter sometime during the first two years of their life. • Each year over 200 million baby male chicks are suffocated or ground up alive because they are worthless to the egg industry. • The cruelty of the food industry is very similar for turkeys.
What can you do to help end their suffering?
• You can help by not eating turkeys and removing animal-byproducts in your life. • Consider these excellent vegan alternatives such as tofu, tempeh, seitan, and vegan meat brands such as Gardein, Tofurky, Field Roast, and Beyond Meat.
