Vivi arrived at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter (SCCAS) in really bad shape. She had multiple deep puncture wounds on her back legs and body, probably from an attack. The veterinary team at SCCAS treated the wounds immediately. She was then placed into a loving CAPE foster home to give her time to heal. And once she started feeling better, her sweet and playful personality began to shine.
We are so thankful to Vivi’s foster guardian for taking such good care and helping her find a wonderful forever home. We think Vivi scored BIG TIME!❤️

 !Belle lived on the streets of Mexico. Not knowing where her next meal would come from was most likely the only life she had ever known. Belle was rescued by our rescue partner Compassion Without Borders and brought to Muttopia, our shelter for rescued dogs co-created by CAPE and CWOB in 2016. Muttopia is a safe haven for dogs to receive the vet care and time they need to get back to health, both physically and psychologically.
Belle is a bit shy of humans so we decided to move her from Muttopia to CAPE's sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA where she could be in a foster home environment. She arrived here over the weekend and she’s already starting to play with toys and the other dogs. Last night she slept sprawled out on the bed she shared with two humans! Belle is sweet, gentle, and darling. She weighs about ten pounds and we believe she is around 8 months old. She would do well in a calm house with another gentle dog. CAPE works with open-door shelters to help alleviate overcrowding by finding placement for animals with special needs or medical issues. Dogs with medical issues often have a difficult time getting adopted, so the medical wards at shelters can get full very quickly. During one of CAPE's visits to a local shelter, we met this tiny chihuahua in their medical ward. She was brought in as a stray with head trauma. She was very nervous but allowed us to check her body carefully for other injuries. With time and TLC, we felt she would be able to make a full recovery. So, snuggled up in the lap of one of the CAPE staff, we took her to Muttopia, our safe space for dogs which we co-created in 2016 with Compassion Without Borders. The wonderful staff at Muttopia quickly placed her into a loving foster home where she could heal in comfort. After a few months, Elle Woods was adopted and now lives a life filled with comfort, playtime, and so much love.
This little dog was found lost and scared on the streets of Sacramento with no identification or microchip. She was taken to a shelter and waited and waited for her family to find her - but no one ever came. She was terrified in the shelter, so CAPE took her and placed her in a loving foster home.
Once safely in a foster home, we named her Ivy. Ivy was fearful at first and reacted by excessively barking at people and other animals. She needed to build trust and confidence. With the help of a professional behaviorist and the patience of her wonderful foster family, Ivy's behavior issues, for the most part, have been sorted out.
