🐾Day 6 of CAPE’s Celebrate Senior Animals Week!💜 Often, we meet animals in shelters who are not good candidates for adoption. These animals are older and usually have chronic health conditions or temperament issues that require that they be closely monitored and cared for. Meet some of the amazing senior dogs in CAPE’s Assisted Living Program! Over the years, CAPE has been able to save the lives of dozens of senior animals who were brought into our Assisted Living Program which is designed to provide animals who are not candidates for adoption with permanent foster care in the home of a loving CAPE foster volunteer. Volunteers who sign up for this program make a commitment to care for the animal for the remainder of the animal’s life, and CAPE covers ALL expenses. The huge success of this program has been due to the kindness and commitment of our wonderful volunteer team, who we are deeply grateful for. Every animal, no matter their circumstances deserves the opportunity to thrive long into their lives. CAPE’s Assisted Living Program has provided a wonderful life, free from suffering to many senior animals. We couldn’t do it without YOU, our CAPE community. 💜🐾Day 3 of CAPE’s Celebrate Senior Animals Week!
When CAPE staff first laid eyes on Gretta, she was in an isolation kennel at the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento. She had been dropped off as a stray and there was no chance that she would be put up for adoption. Her age was estimated to be around 13 years old. She had multiple tumors all over her body. Her fur was matted with dirt and filth. There was a good chance that Gretta was never going to leave the animal shelter unless CAPE rescued her. So we did. Gretta is now in her CAPE Assisted Living foster home. She is nearly blind and mostly deaf. After she was shaved and groomed, our veterinarian removed two tumors from her body. The tumor on her front leg was determined to be a sarcoma. Gretta also has multiple mammary tumors and we discovered she was never spayed. Now that she lives in CAPE's Assisted Living program, Gretta has settled into a comfortable routine. She will receive all the care and love she needs for the rest of her life. When she is not waddling around the house in her favorite sweaters, Gretta likes to nap in her favorite bed. This little dog was found lost and scared on the streets of Sacramento with no identification or microchip. She was taken to a shelter and waited and waited for her family to find her - but no one ever came. She was terrified in the shelter, so CAPE took her and placed her in a loving foster home.
Once safely in a foster home, we named her Ivy. Ivy was fearful at first and reacted by excessively barking at people and other animals. She needed to build trust and confidence, and thanks to a wonderful, professional behaviorist to guide Ivy and her foster family, her behavior issues were sorted out. Watch this video and Ivy will tell you all about the next chapter of her journey. Meet Shag! He is a cute, scruffy, 1 to 2 year old terrier mix who is playful and spunky. Shag would do great in a home with an active family with older kids and a big yard. Another dog to play with would be a plus for him as he will need daily exercise. Shag weighs in at about 40 lbs.
Shag was at a local shelter that is currently on lockdown. It was not a good place for a young energetic pup to be so CAPE took him in and placed him in one of our foster homes. If you are interested in adopting Shag, please fill out an application here! |
