When a family found out that one of their goats, LaBelle, who they describe as "the sweetest thing ever!", tested positive for CAE - an incurable viral disease that is contagious to other goats - they tried separating her from the herd. But LaBelle cried all day and night wanting to be with her companions. A vet suggested culling her but they would not even consider doing that to LaBelle. They started reaching out to rescues to find a safe place for her. CAPE was contacted and we knew that she would be the perfect companion for Lorrie, a sweet goat with CAE already living at the sanctuary.
Last year we built Lorrie her own enclosure with a separated piece of pasture and she has settled in very nicely to her routine. We are thrilled that she will now have another goat companion. Although Howard the pig and Bogart the turkey may be a little disappointed as they have been excellent company to Lorrie. Labelle will be quarantined in a separate stall when she arrives, given a full health check by CAPE’s trusted vet, and then introduced to Lorrie. We’re crossing our fingers that these two sweet goats become the best of friends!

Vivi arrived at the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter (SCCAS) in really bad shape. She had multiple deep puncture wounds on her back legs and body, probably from an attack. The veterinary team at SCCAS treated the wounds immediately. She was then placed into a loving CAPE foster home to give her time to heal. And once she started feeling better, her sweet and playful personality began to shine.
We are so thankful to Vivi’s foster guardian for taking such good care and helping her find a wonderful forever home. We think Vivi scored BIG TIME!❤️ !Belle lived on the streets of Mexico. Not knowing where her next meal would come from was most likely the only life she had ever known. Belle was rescued by our rescue partner Compassion Without Borders and brought to Muttopia, our shelter for rescued dogs co-created by CAPE and CWOB in 2016. Muttopia is a safe haven for dogs to receive the vet care and time they need to get back to health, both physically and psychologically.
Belle is a bit shy of humans so we decided to move her from Muttopia to CAPE's sanctuary in Grass Valley, CA where she could be in a foster home environment. She arrived here over the weekend and she’s already starting to play with toys and the other dogs. Last night she slept sprawled out on the bed she shared with two humans! Belle is sweet, gentle, and darling. She weighs about ten pounds and we believe she is around 8 months old. She would do well in a calm house with another gentle dog. CAPE is currently taking applications for Belle. If interested in adopting Belle, please go here! Izzy arrived at the shelter as a stray with mats, burs, missing hair, and irritated skin. Her vet exam determined that she was underweight, had cataracts, a sizeable under bite, and a significant heart murmur. In a nutshell, Izzy was in need of some major veterinary care.Once CAPE was contacted, we flew into high gear and placed Izzy in one of our amazing foster homes.
Izzy is approximately 12 years old. She met her four-legged foster family, including the resident cat, and did great. She had a much-needed bath and groom and she is already feeling so much better. Izzy also got a full vet workup, including bloodwork and urinalysis. The good news is she is quite healthy! Our biggest hurdle will be keeping an eye on Izzy’s heart murmur and managing her allergies. Already, her hair is starting to grow back and Izzy is adjusting to her new, pampered lifestyle. We will keep you posted on her progress. If you would like to support animals like Izzy, please visit www.capeanimals.org/make-a-donation1.html |
