Highway

Highway, an approximately 2 1/2 year-old neutered male cattle dog mix, spent over three months living by his wits in the bushes along the side of Highway 1 in Santa Cruz. Animal shelter staff went out over 80 times attempting to catch him and the highway was closed 7 or 8 times for him. After repeatedly outwitting everyone, he was finally captured at the end of March 2010. The transition to confined living was understandably confusing and somewhat traumatic for Highway. He went into foster care at the end of April. He has made considerable strides in the past 7 months but he is still very shy with people.

Despite Highway’s nervousness around unfamiliar humans, he has never shown an ounce of aggression. He blossoms around his canine cousins and enjoys living with three other dogs and a cat in his foster home. Highway has completed a beginning obedience class where he excelled. His favorite activities are riding in the car, going for walks or runs and playing with other dogs. He would do best in a home where people are around at least part of the day. He needs daily exercise since his activity level is high; however, he is very calm in the house. A runner would be a perfect match for him. Highway is charming, a project, a happy dog who is worth the effort to continue socializing. He has a beautiful spirit, an amazing history, and he is a testament to resiliency.
