One of the local shelters asked if CAPE could help out with a few of their dogs that would benefit from foster care. Goldie, a very large golden lab, was the first dog we evaluated and he immediately won our hearts. He is so sweet and gentle that it was obvious in the first 5 minutes of meeting him that you could trust him with anybody. He is a giant sweetie pie! And then we noticed that there was a mysterious bump on the side of his nose. We decided to have a biopsy performed and were shocked and saddened to learn that the bump was a fibro sarcoma, a cancerous tumor with a very poor prognosis. We were told there was no treatment available that would safely prolong his life. The veterinarians felt he had maybe weeks, possibly months, at best a year to live. We were devastated because Goldie looked and acted like a happy, healthy dog with a lot more life to live. Several weeks earlier, CAPE had received a call from Tia who offered to become a new foster home for CAPE. She clearly loves dogs and generously wanted to open her home to a dog in need while a permanent home was found. Usually, we like to start new foster families out with a case that will be fairly easy with a quick turn around. But for Goldie, our options had run out. Reluctantly, we called Tia to run Goldie's case by her. We told her that, because of his medical condition, we were simply looking for a place for him to live out the remainder of his life. We told her that this case would definitely be a tough one and that he might only have a few weeks until the tumor affected his breathing and that it would most likely intrude into his mouth at which time we would have to euthanize him. Tia listened carefully while we explained everything to her about the situation. After giving it an hour's thought, Tia called back. She said "I really want to help this dog out. I am going to give him the best weeks or months that he could ever possibly imagine." And that's exactly what she has done. Tia and Goldie (who she now calls Toby) are together 24/7. You might be able to see him sometime riding in the back seat of her car as they are going on some new adventure, his giant head joyfully out the window and his ears flapping in the breeze. Tia, thank you for your incredible, selfless gift of time to Toby. You are an inspiration to us all.
