What happens to the
CAPE animals?
SUNSET
- ADOPTED Sunset is in his new home with guardians Tom and Melissa and their two cats. All of them couldn't be happier with each other. Sunset has already made friends with his feline companions, who like to rub up against him and play with him. Melissa takes Sunset on runs with her. He also goes to the beach where he can run and play with other dogs. Sunset has been introduced to the dogs on the block. His special friend is the dog next door. As you can see, Sunset is leading an ideal life with much love and attention from his new family. A cause for celebration!

HENRY - ADOPTED Well, Stephanie, Jenny and the rest of the CAPE gang couldn't be happier! Henry has been with us for a couple of months, waiting for just the right home. And, he found it! Henry was special enough to have the benefit of two foster moms that cared for him and fell head over heels for this boy and love him dearly. They waited to find a home that would suit Henry's special needs as he is blind. Henry's new home with Sue and Pat couldn't be a better one. Sue fell in love with Henry the moment she saw him and, not only does he get a loving set of parents, he gets the benefit of a couple of canine playmates when Sue's daughter comes to visit or the dogs need some dogsitting. As you can see by the photo this sweet boy seems to fit right into his new home, filled with lots of attention and love. I think he's even smiling here. It was a bittersweet goodbye as Henry stole all of our hearts but, once again, we have a truly happy ending. Saving these companions' lives truly changes the lives of those around them. Thanks Henry for reminding us of this great lesson. Good luck!
OLIVER - ADOPTED On May 28,2001, Oliver went to the loving home he so much deserves. Betsy and Fred are his new guardians. They are retired and can give Oliver the tender loving care he thrives on. When our foster mom visited the home a week after the adoption, Oliver already seemed happier, less nervous and more playful. Oliver enjoys his daily walks around his neighborhood and particularly is fond of sitting on Fred's lap. In short, he looked great and seems to know he had found the security he needed.
CHARLIE - ADOPTED Charlie went to a wonderful home this last weekend. His new family, pictured here, includes his new guardian, Marlise, and her children Georgia and Lillian. Charlie couldn't be happier. He's already sleeping by the hearth at night, accompanying his mom around town, helping keep an eye on the kids, and making sure all the crumbs stay off the floor. Charlie is a wonderful dog and has found the perfect home. Thanks to Marlise, Carl, Georgia and Lillian for making it possible.
ALICE - ADOPTED Alice ( Allie ) went to her permanent home with Sue, Samuel and 4 cats on March 27, 2001. This wonderful, easy going lady appears to have already made herself comfortable in her new abode; she has been seen trying out the various chairs and couches and bed in the house. Sue reports that she and her husband are already in love with their new companion. Sue can not believe how easy it is to live with Allie who enjoys car rides, going to the beach, or just relaxing at home. Thank you to Sue and Samuel for making such a wonderful place for Allie.
JAZZY - ADOPTED Jazzy was adopted by her new family on March 18th. This most wonderful sweet easy going dog found a family where she will be most loved and appreciated. Barbara ( mother ) is the prime care giver but all the family members give Jazzy attention. The youngest member of the family, Maia , says she likes Jazzy's kisses. Jazzy has already been to the beach and on long walks. At night, she hangs out with the rest of the family in the living room . Yet to appreciate Jazzy's company are the two young cats in residence. Since Jazzy has lived successfully with others cats, and actually loves to kiss them, Barbara is sure her cats will grow to like Jazzy too. It is nice to report another happy ending.
ELSIE - ADOPTED Well, Elsie couldn't have gone to a better home. Cathy and her wonderful family were taken with Elsie from the moment they saw her. And who wouldn't be...she's an amazing dog with lots to offer. She is having a ball playing with the kids, handing out with Cathy and getting visits with her local neighbors for social doggy time. Elsie will be missed but she has found a great place to celebrate her life.
SIMON - ADOPTED On a beautiful sunny day, Simon went to his new home with Sandy, Howard, their dog Sadie, a bunny rabbit and a parakeet. Simon immediately seemed happy. He spent time checking out his new surroundings and his new friends. Howard and Sandy took him to the beach in the evening where he met lots of other dogs to play with and where he was able to "shake hands " with lots of new people. Simon's foster parent is delighted that he will be in a home with so much love and devotion. Simon knows he has found his true place. This is truly a happy ending.
TEDDY - ADOPTED Teddy found his new permanent home today with Linette, Harmony and Dane. This little stuffed animal look-alike, is not going to ever be lacking love and affection again. We left him in the arms of Harmony and Dane where he had already made himself quite comfortable. The family understands Teddy and his quirky little special needs, (incredible amounts of schmoozing, being one of them) and promised to share their home and hearts with the little cutie pie for the rest of his years. Best of times to Teddy and his new family. You were meant to be together.
Coincidence Or Providence? Many times throughout our lives, events occur which leave us bewildered and questioning: was that just coincidence or was it providence? Just such an event recently happened at CAPE. Despite the little black dog?s anxiety, he was endearing and charming. He captured CAPE volunteers? hearts and soon, foster plans were being made. Favoring a cuddly black bear, he was named Teddy. His foster mom hastily made short-notice arrangements to get Teddy cleaned up after he was rescued from the shelter. A kind-hearted groomer agreed to "squeeze" him in. Unbeknownst to the people, Teddy?s path had crossed the groomer?s before. When his foster mom came to pick Teddy up, the groomer announced, "You know, I?ve seen this little guy before. If he?s the one I?m thinking of ? and I?m almost positive he is ? he was wandering around on Mission. We kept him for a while, but no one claimed him so we took him to the shelter." They chatted and thought it was an odd, but pleasant, coincidence. Although signs of prior abuse were evident, Teddy flourished in his new foster home. One day, a special family inquired about Teddy ... just the family Teddy had been waiting for. CAPE volunteers arrived with Teddy at his new home. All were surprised when Linette, his adoptive mom, said about Teddy, "You know, I?ve seen this little guy before." Sound familiar? She proceeded to recount a story that many of us have witnessed, but felt helpless to intervene in. A man dragged a little dog on a leash, yanking him so hard the dog?s head rammed into a tree. Pleas on the dog?s behalf were met with threats. That little dog was Teddy. Whether it was a strange coincidence or divine providence, Teddy had found himself not once, but twice, in the arms of "guardian angels." Now, that?s where he?ll stay.
JASPER - ADOPTED The most parented, overprotected, loved little guy, that CAPE has seen in a long while........Not only was this little guy admired by everyone , but he had many, many parents and friends, wanting to see him in the right home with his perfect companion. Jasper moved in with Dario today, a very loving, kind, and generous man, willing and wanting to share his home and lifestyle with this incredibly intelligent little Ausi mix. Dario not only understands the breed and their special needs, but he respects and appreciates the incredible sensitivity and special needs of this little cutie, and looks forward to all of the upcoming adventures the two will share together. We are all very happy for Jasper and wish him all the luck in the world. And, we send a special thanks to the foster homes who have kept this little buddy's spirit alive until he could find his permanent home! We will miss you Casper, Jack, Jasper, incredible loving, dedicated, beautiful little being. Update: Here's what Jasper wrote us, about his new home: I would like to thank Stephanie, Terre and everyone at CAPE for adopting me to my new human. I am very happy with him. He takes me for rides in the car everyday so that we can go to the park and sniff-out lots of good smells and run through big mud puddles. My human likes it when I run through mud puddles. Whenever I do so he begins barking loudly and waving his arms around wildly in an excited manner. Each day, after a long afternoon of exploring, we always return to our cave. I really like my new cave. There are no other dogs to eat my food and lots of good places to curl up and snooze comfortably. My human is very lazy, so I have decided that it is best to wake him in the morning by licking his face and wrestling with him. When I wrestle, I always fluff-up my ears and growl ferociously. But I never bite my human too hard due to his thin fur coat. He seems to really appreciate being awakened this way. Sometimes, when I am extra cute and attentive, my human gives me a cookie or a rawhide bone to chew. I am sure that I will get many more tasty treats and go on many more adventures for being the good dog that I am. Thanks again for adopting me to my new human! I am very happy. Jasper
CAESAR - ADOPTED Caesar, now known as Sid, Sid Caesar, arrived at his new home on Christmas Eve. Caesar met and fell in love with Lynne and Gary and is now in their care and loving home up in the Santa Cruz mountains. We're sure Caesar will do very well in his new home, since his guardians are very familiar with Great Danes and seem to be very smitten with this soft-muzzled beauty. He has two new kitty siblings and is already getting to know them. We are all so very happy for this new found family and give an extra big hug and thanks to all of the folks who assisted with Caesar's care and recovery. He's absolutely gorgeous, and can't stop smiling! Update, Jan. 21: We got the chance to check on our little buddy to see how he was settling in. What an amazing life this boy has! He has never been happier, looked healthier and been more cared for than by his new guardians. If you take a look at our Rescues in Rehab page and compare the photos of Caesar then and today, you will not believe your eyes. There is no longer a rib to be seen! We couldn't be happier. Thank you, Lynne and Gary for giving Caesar an incredible second chance.
The little "Love Sponge" - ADOPTED Well, for this little adorable ball of fur, the third time is a charm! Spongie, was lucky enough to meet a wonderful new friend and companion, Caryl Turner, who just loves him dearly, and states it's like they've known each other forever. Spongie recently found Caryl after losing his former companions due to a move. When you see the two of them together, you know this little guy has some pretty good luck, along with a good sense for nice people. Spongie now lives right down the street from the Beach, but according to Caryl, spends most of his time chasing her around the house and up and down the many staircases in his new home. She's never out of his sight and visa versa. Good luck to this cute little couple, there are many fun times ahead!
NAPOLEON - ADOPTED This perky little fellow was adopted by a big family -- a human "mom" and "dad," three kids, two dogs, two cats, and a guinea pig. He was renamed Willie (because the youngest child couldn't pronounce "Napoleon") and immediately made himself right at home. He loves his long daily walks, trotting after the kids when they play basketball or ride their bikes, roughhousing with the other animals, and snuggling next to mom and dad at night. The rest of the time, he trots around the house with a stuffed "Curious George" toy in his mouth until he finds a lap to curl up in. What a great ending for this little guy!
PRINCE - ADOPTED After experiencing some rough times, like many of our CAPE animals, Vince (fka Prince) realized a dream come true; he was adopted by Richard and Marcia. He now plays endlessly with his new dog brother, Bailey, and receives plenty of love and affection from his new people. He enjoys fetching sticks and chasing the deer who taunt him from the other side of the fence. With the love and stability he has gained from Marcia and Richard, he is looking (and probably feeling) better than ever!
CLEO - ADOPTED After four days in foster care, Cleo was adopted by Linda and John, from Sacramento. This is the same family who adopted Walter (see below). Since adopting him, Linda and John have been looking for a playmate. Cleo appears to be that special friend they've been looking for. Besides the two dogs immediately getting along, Cleo also engaged the hearts of Linda and John. They've returned from their Thanksgiving weekend with a new member of the family and all are doing well.
CODY - ADOPTED CODY was adopted on election day ( November 7, 2000 ). He was selected to be "president" of Julia and Kaya's house .His decisive victory and overwhelming popularity put US presidential hopefuls to shame. Cody is loved dearly. His life is full of excitement. He goes to the beach, takes walks with his new family, goes on car rides, plays ball in the backyard and lounges on the living room couch. He is certainly a lucky fellow to have found such a loving home.
BUDDY - ADOPTED Is this the happiest family ever, or what? Buddy was swept up by this very loving couple who were smitten from the moment they saw him. They had just begun their search for a doggy companion when they came upon CAPE. And, it didn't take them long. Within hours of the first visit they called back saying they wanted Buddy to be part of their family. Buddy couldn't have been happier. His first few hours at his new home were spent enjoying a new bone, a warm fire and the sights, smells and routines of his new family. And it's just continued to get better. We're even told he gets tucked in to bed at night. So sweet. Genine and Bron, Buddy's guardians, are working diligently to bring Buddy's weight down to a manageable level. He came to CAPE very overweight. Since his adoption, he is already looking more fit and happier than ever. It will be no time at all before he is back to a healthy level. This is truly a very happy ending for everyone involved. This final photo, I think, says it all.
(You can catch Buddy and his family on "Speaking of Animals" in the next week or so...Santa Cruz Community Television, Channel 27, Mondays at 7pm.)
KELLY - ADOPTED Kelly is now in her hew home with Gina, her son Max, and Iko a beautiful active one and a half year old German Shepherd. They report that Kelly is doing very well and "smiles" more with each passing day. Kelly has a great deal to be happy about - she is adored by her new family and gets to go to the beach twice a day. Although her foster mother thought Kelly liked people more than dogs, this does not seem to be the case. She was just waiting for the right man to come her way. Iko seems to be that special guy. He and Kelly love to romp and play with each other. Kelly seems to be a good match for the entire family.
It's a match made in Heaven!!! Butch, a recent Santa Cruz SPCA rescue, found his permanent home today, and WOW was it a sweet scenario. When Butch first met Tracey and Steve, he was overwhelmed with the desire to schmooze. It worked; they took him home to meet the princess of their household, Stella! Stella, also a Boston Terrier, sniffed, grunted, and fell in love with this young, tall, (well, for a Boston Terrier) handsome dude. They skinny dipped together in the local watering hole then went around town to meet all the locals. Butch was very, very happy when I last saw him. As a matter of fact, I don't even think he noticed me driving away!!!!!!
CREOLE - ADOPTED Creole was adopted by Judy and Bill Holmes from San Lorenzo. This was a very romantic story, since Judy and Bill were friends of Creole's foster mom, Nell. It appears that Judy had accompanied Nell when Nell rescued Creole from the shelter way back in the middle of September. Since then, Judy has had her eye on Creole and would check in periodically to see how the little girl was coming along. Judy knew that Creole was going to be needing a new home, but Judy was unsure about her own living situation since her plans were to be moving soon with her family to Yakima, Washington. So, as luck may have it, the week Creole went up for adoption in the paper, Nell received a call from Judy wanting to know if Creole was still available. Nell explained to Judy that it was really strange that there had been no calls on this darling little girl and that she had expected that she would be adopted immediately. Creole was still available. So it was clear to Judy that this match was meant to be. Judy explained to Nell that she had been thinking about Creole ever since she had met her and was really hoping that she would be able to work something out so she could adopt her. So, she did. Judy and Bill's home in Yakima, Washington is in escrow and they will be taking Creole with them on their new adventure. Good luck to the Holmes. We know Creole will be very happy.
Walter is finally home.... Our little buddy left today with his newly formed family. Linda and John recently moved to Sacramento, from Santa Cruz and, after setting up house and home, came back to adopt Walter, who was waiting. Walter bonded with his new family right away and rode off to Sacramento. He has a new bed, toys, goes on daily walks and is one happy fella!
RED - ADOPTED RED, now named Buddy Boy,was only with his foster parent, Rena, for 3 days when he was whisked off by a close friend of Rena's. After visiting him several times and introducing him to her partner and 8 year old daughter, they decided to adopt him. They all agreed that he was lovable, charming and would fit into their life style. Buddy Boy settled into his new home quickly and reports that he loves his new family.
COPPER - ADOPTED A LOVE STORY One rainy night in March of 1998, we were heading up to the Sierras. Wandering in the road was a dog. I got out of the car, followed the dog and my husband followed with the car. I reached her and we put her in the back of our car, with our wonderful Golden Retriever, Petey. We nursed her back to health with the help of our veterinarian and we spent the next year and a half loving this wonderful being we named Nellie. She was an English Springer Spaniel. Nellie left us, at age 13, last September 27th, on what might have been her happiest day. We recently returned from a camping trip back to some of the places we spent with Nellie and I found myself grieving for her....and the years and time I never had with her. I always wished I could have had that time to have known her and given her a happy life. Three days after returning home, I saw an ad in the Sentinel from CAPE, for an English Springer Spaniel, 3 years old. I called and spoke to Terre who was so wonderful, friendly and encouraging. The foster parents were away for the Labor Day weekend and it was all I could think about....seeing Copper. Marilee called us on Labor Day and the three of us went to her home, to meet Copper. The three of us loved Copper and Petey enjoyed meeting him too....Marilee was so encouraging and supportive. We went to a phone booth and called and said we would love to have Copper join our family. The next day, Marilee and Copper came to our house, we completed the CAPE paperwork and our new family member came to join us. We were aware of Copper's disappointments and fears and started working on building up his confidence and letting him adjust to our world. All of our cats and Petey love him and our office cat thinks he is great. We feel like Copper is a gift, almost a miracle, and our love for him grows deeper each day. To quote my husband, he said I am head over heels in love with this dog.......... I received a wonderful call from JP and a note in the mail, thanking us for our support of CAPE. We are the ones who feel thankful, to CAPE and the wonderful volunteers....all of the effort in connecting us with this most special and wonderful dog, Copper. Thank you, Thank you, thank you. Kitties From my early thirties until almost twenty years later my rather solitary existence was shared by two beautiful cats, both pure white with one blue eye and one yellow eye though, in each, the symmetry was reversed. When I found myself bereft of their company through the natural tides of life and death, sadness occupied the void of their former company. As one of these little friends lived to nearly twenty, the thought of finding new feline company in my mid fifties had me wondering whether I would live long enough to support and share their lives to the end. This concept was fostered by the fact that I had recently run into my first physical ailments which were distinct intimations of mortality. To cat, or not to cat, that was the question! After nearly nine months of indecision, long after sadness had been transformed to fond memory, I was still vacillating. Some friends had just lost one of a brother/sister pair of Labrador Retrievers leaving the surviving sibling in desperate straights, being unable to eat and just listlessly moping around. Being acquainted with CAPE's work finding homes for rescued animals, they fostered an animal which turned out to be a fascinating stimulus for their older pal who began to eat and take interest in life again. In short order they found themselves with a permanent new member of their family. As a result I thought to give CAPE a call. Let me just say that it is my experience that they have a real knack for putting together animals, people and circumstances for the benefit of all. There were two cats from the Palo Alto Shelter whom were felt to have become such fast friends that they wanted them to go to the same home. Ideal! I like the idea of two cats. One was a beautiful black and white female of about nine years (and a very refined lady at that) who had belonged to a recently deceased elderly woman, leaving Sybil (?!?...now Sweetie Pie) bereft and in the shelter. And here I'd been concerned with just that issue! There she met Mr. Big Chops. What, you say, Mr. Big Chops? Yes, and my initial feeling was to change his name immediately until living with him for these past few weeks. He is a goof. If he were human he would be a punk with attitude. What a character...so Mr. Big Chops he is and always will be. It's funny but I never would have seen past the scruffy alley cat look of him to have seen the bright spirit within. Beyond being a great hunter, which I needed, he is affectionate, rambunctious, playful and generally a total character. From the first day when he charged right up next to Sweetie Pie, leaped up and sideways to land on the other side of her hissing crouch and then scampered off with his tail held high, I was entranced by his antics which have been the source of much hilarity. I'm afraid Sweetie Pie has to loosen up, though, as the gift of freedom has strained their friendship a bit. Mr. Big Chops is too much of a teenage idiot just now for the refined, middle aged Sweetie Pie. So therein lies my tale. I'm grateful to have these two share my life. Thank you CAPE! -- Cheers!
