Wendy
As you can see, Wendy
scored the perfect home. She is now a member of a darling family
with four children and two adults, all of whom adore her. She goes
everywhere with them and always has someone fun to play with. Wendy
is one very lucky dog and the Lawtons consider themselves a very
lucky family to have Wendy join their life. |

Our
Happy Ending with Toby (Sully)
Our new
dog is a fun, sweet, cute companion who is changing into quite a
character. He started out very docile, but as he grows in confidence,
he is becoming livelier, noisier, and more responsive. He loves
to go outside for walks and is finding his place in the hierarchy
of dogs in our neighborhood. His best dog friend is a CAPE dog from
Mexico City. Toby likes to sleep in his crate at night and gets
along with our cat fairly well. He sleeps on the couch by the fire
but is always ready to get up if there is food involved or barking
to be done.
Toby is growing in his attachment to us and we have loved him from
the start. We are thankful for the folks who rescued him and then
made him available to us.

Eva
On the 16 of December
2007, Eva, renamed Maggie, went to her permanent loving home.
As is typical of this wonderful dog, her transition to her new
home was made with ease. The Hurleys were ready to greet her with
open arms and a basket of toys and goodies. The family could not
be more pleased with their new addition.
Katinka Hurley writes,
"Things are going well with our sweet girl. We have
had many walks, park time, and a playdate with my friend's dachshunds. She
did beautifully. Maggie also met the neighborhood "terror"
by chance- a chihuahua with a lot of attitude. Even that went
well.
"She sleeps with Olivia my daughter, then alternates between
her bed and mine. She is eating normally, and responds very well
when we ask her to come and sit. I have also taught her to stay
- she is very smart and eager to please. I actually got to hear
her bark today!
"She likes to sit on the living room chair and look out the
window. She also likes to visit my daughter's preschool,
and of course, the kids just love her. She pretty much goes
everywhere I go, and has a special car blanket.
We feel so blessed to have her in our lives."
Maggie is a very lucky young lady to find such a special family
to call her own. We wish them many years of happiness together.

Tink,
Twinkle, Fiona, FeeFee or Nip
We just don't know what to name the newest member of our family.
She doesn't seem to care what you call her, but she does care greatly
for her new family. She seems so thankful and genuinely happy to
have a mom, dad, brother, sister and two other dogs to share her
life with.
After fostering many wonderful, adorable dogs over the last three
years, I was finally able and lucky enough to keep one! Well, I've
actually wanted to keep them all, but, of course, if I did that,
I would no longer be able to foster. Fostering for CAPE has been
such a rewarding, sometimes heartbreaking experience. I cherish
every dog that comes through my door, and miss them dearly when
they leave. They have all touched my heart in their own special
way.
This little, energetic powder puff makes us smile and laugh; she
is quite a funny character. She has added a refreshing energy to
our “pack”. We are truly blessed to have her, and are
looking forward to many great adventures together.

Paloma
When we saw Paloma (aka
Pohpee, Pal, Palleywal, Love-Dove, Tres Leches) in early June at
the Woof to Woof here in Aptos, we were not on the look out for
potential adoptions into our family. We already had furry loves
at home-a snuggly cat, Chicken, and a very smart and loyal Blue
Heeler, Patch. We had briefly discussed the possibility of getting
another dog, in a passing conversation weeks before but had come
to no decisions. Paloma made the decision for us.
I saw Paloma across the field with an adoption cape on. She was
on the smaller side for a Heeler and appeared to be a young dog
when in fact she was already 3. When I started petting her, it hit
me what love at first site meant. I couldn't believe how taken I
was after just a few moments of magical ear rubbing and back scratching.
I was absolutely smitten, head over heels in love, with this ginger-eyed,
sweet soul. We planned to adopt her after a previously planned vacation
to Hawaii. It was all I could do not to cancel our trip and stay
so we could be with Paloma.
Paloma joined our family as soon as we returned from vacation, after
a long stay at a very loving and secure foster with many other tail-wagging
friends to play with. While it was in her nature to be nothing less
than affectionate and sweet, she took a good week before she decided
we were deserving of such a princess. We couldn't help but want
to make our family worthy of such a tender soul. Patch gently tested
the waters of her personal space as she slowly allowed him closer
and closer until finally she understood he, too, wanted to play,
chase, and be chased. She quickly realized that we wanted nothing
more than for her to feel like she was one of the family; to snuggle
with us on the sofa, snore in our ears as she slept in our bed,
and be chauffeured around for most every outing.
We have all quickly bonded since June and can not believe what joy
our little 3 legged love has brought into our lives. We have all
had such a deepening joy and elation with Paloma's completion of
our family. She is my heart that walks around outside of my body. |

Gustavo
Gustavo was adopted on
July 22, 2007. He is now a member of Team Small Dog (he's the dog
on the right), featuring Laura and Gary, and Timmy (age 14), Ruby
(age 7) & OtterPop (age 3). Gustavo was rescued by Compassion
Without Borders from Juarez, Mexico. Laura met him while he was
being fostered by a CAPE volunteer.
Laura writes: "
I knew right away that he was the right dog to bring into the family.
And he was. He now enjoys running fast every morning at the beach,
going to work every day at a ranch and playing with dog toys at
full throttle speed with his other dogs. Gustavo makes everyone
he meets his new best pal. Some of the other Team members are avid
agility competitors, and Gustavo has started out with basic foundation
training hoping to follow in their footsteps. He seems very excited
about this prospect already. Pretty much, every new person and new
situation he encounters thrills him to no end. And we sure feel
very lucky to have found this very special little dog." |

Solovina
Solovina has found her
forever home. She now gets to enjoy the company of two people who
adore her and, best of all, her new pal, Cosmo, who loves to play
her favorite games of chase and ball. We were hoping to find the
perfect home for Solovina with at least one adult who is home during
the day and at least one canine friend. Our wish came true. After
her long journey from a desperate situation in Juarez, Mexico, Solovina
can now look forward to a very happy life filled with love and never
ending games of chase and frisbee with her new family. Congratulations
Solovina - here's to a very long and play-filled life! |

Pablo
We wanted
to try our hand at being a foster family for C.A.P.E., but we certainly
had no intention of adopting. We didn’t want to have more
than one dog because we travel quite a bit, we have always preferred
larger dogs, and our older dog doesn’t care to share his food
and our attention.
But Pablo changed all that in just a few short weeks. After getting
to know him, none of us could imagine sending him on. He guaranteed
himself a “forever” home by sheer force of personality.
He’s a mischievous, cuddly sock bandit who also stole our
hearts. Even our old guy, Bob, was clearly won over by his charm.
It was one of the best decisions we've ever made! |

Sherry
Lavett Riley
This little poodle arrived
at the Hayward Airport, along with 12 other rescued dogs, from Juarez,
Mexico. They flew to the USA on a small Malibu Piper aircraft. Once
they touched down, Security Guard Michael Riley stopped his truck
to see what all the commotion was about. That's when he saw Sherry.
Michael and his wife Donna, had been searching for a dog to adopt.
When he picked up Sherry, Michael knew he had finally found their
dog. Both he and Donna had hoped to rescue someone who needed them.
Now, Sherry follows Donna around the house all day. Plus the two
of them take long walks together through their neighborhood. Looking
at Sherry Donna says, "I have cared for my family my whole
life, and now this little girl is taking care of me - well actually
we're taking care of each other." |

Chiros
(now Bennie)
Bennie was adopted
on May 18, 2007 in Santa Cruz. Here is what Kim wrote about Bennie:
"Bennie is a little miracle that changed our lives and stole
our hearts. He was traumatized in Juarez, Mexico where he was
scheduled to be euthanized and we think at one time he may have
been mistreated by a man. However, his gentle demeanor, playfulness
and the unconditional love and trust he showed us right from the
start is just amazing. Bennie has finally come home and
he knows it too. He just loves to be where you are, either sitting
on your lap, dancing on his hind legs for a ball, or just watching
you cook. He is a part of our souls. Those around him are truly
affected by his sweet and funny personality. This little
guy is more than special, he is a GEM. We would like to thank
CAPE for this precious gift of love and the trust they had in
us right from the beginning. We are so grateful".

Sheba
Sheba was adopted on May 4,
2007. Her new family consists of: her guardian Tina; Tina's mother, Audrey,
who keeps everyone in line during the day while Tina works; Teddy, who
is a sweet, elder, gentlemen dog and 6 cats. Here is what Tina has to
say:
"Sheba has spent the past ten days carefully evaluating us before
giving us the final ok. She wanted to make sure that her meals were timely
and to her liking. That she could sleep wherever, and whenever she wished
to do so. That she was taken on long week-end hikes as well as shorter
excursions to parks and school grounds during the week. That she would
get her daily brushing, belly rubbing and smooches. That she could pick
out her own treats at Petco. That Teddy would do whatever she told him
to do...and that all the cats would recognize that in this household now,
the old adage "Cat's Rule, Dog's Drool", no longer applies-except
for Teddy.
Sheba has accepted the permanent position as Princess of our home and
acknowledges that everything, and everyone in it, belong to her. We couldn't
be happier. She is such an affectionate companion and very, very smart,
too. She has learned the few house rules quickly and has adopted very
good fence manners with the dogs next door. She runs like the wind when
off leash in safe areas, but always keeps me in sight and returns the
moment I call her. She likes to take naps in the planter box next to the
back door, moving inside if it gets too warm. She has declined to go swimming
yet, but is wading in the river a little bit. All the cats have gone back
to their own business and don't spend days watching Sheba's every move
anymore. They have accepted her completely, and she, in return, ignores
them completely, as befits her position.
She's just an absolute love-not an Angel, thank goodness-but a fun, affectionate,
silly at times, great addition to our family."
We thank you for giving Sheba a most wonderful home where she will feel
secure and loved for the remainder of her life.

Betty
Betty was adopted in
November of 2006. Her new parents, Susan and Ernie, say they are
in love with this adorable scruffy girl! We could not have found
Betty a more perfect home. Ernie not only takes Betty to the beach
for her morning strolls but also sometimes to work. Susan says Betty
has great house manners and is wonderful company for her. Betty
came a long way from Mexico to Santa Cruz, and I am sure she is
grateful to all of those who helped make that journey possible.
Yay, Betty!!!!!! |

Eddie
Sweet Eddie was adopted
on January 16th, 2007. Eddie was rescued by CAPE from the Silicon
Valley Humane Society. He was trembling and terrified in his kennel
when we went to meet him. CAPE knew we had to help this lovable,
middle aged fellow. All Eddie needed was a little security in his
life and a whole lot of love. Well, he found it with Aileen and
her daughter Marsha. Aileen is retired and can be with Eddie 24/7,
which I know he loves. Aileen says Eddie is just perfect for her
and her family.
Thank you Aileen for adopting an older dog, and making the rest
of Eddie's life so wonderful! |

On October
15,2006, Lucerito was adopted by a wonderful family. Here
is what Lauren wrote about Lucerito:
"We all feel as
though our lives have been completely changed by adopting Lucerito.
He gives us so much love. He is a very tender and gentle soul. We
wanted an animal that would be relaxed and yet playful, get along
with both people and other animals he meets, and has a sweet character
that would fit in well with our family. We got more than what we
"asked" for. Seeing him relax on our family room floor
as we bustle around doing our thing, we all--at different times--find
ourselves going over and playing and snuggling with him. He loves
the affection, and moreover, we love the feeling in ourselves that
we can offer so much of our love to him and feel more of it with
each other too because of his presence. We thank CAPE from the bottom
of our hearts for this huge gift, the addition of another loving
family member into our lives." Lauren, Diego, Kylin, and Jayden
And CAPE is so grateful to you for providing the nurturing
environment which Lucerito so rightfully deserves.

Pinky
At the
end of September 2006, Pinky was adopted by Emma, Paul and their
young children, Matthew and Deven. Despite Pinky being blind, she
is a contented little dog who enjoys her life. Paul covers Pinky
with a blanket when she goes to sleep at night; in the morning,
when she wakes up, Pinky does a little "dance" around
Emma. The children enjoy feeding Pinky under the table at meal times
when their parents aren't looking! Pinky is an integral part of
the family and goes almost everywhere with them. She is a great
fan of car rides and walks which are daily occurrences in her full
and happy life. Thank you to this wonderful family for extending
their home to Pinky. |

Helen
Helen's
foster mom, Sue, thought it would be "Happy Trails" when
Helen and she set out on a road trip in August to visit an old friend
in Indiana who wanted to adopt Helen. Little did Sue know that traveling
across country with Helen would pave the way for a surprising conclusion
to her long search for a home when Sue's friend proved too physically
disabled to go through with the adoption. A perfect traveling companion,
Helen was not only a hit at every rest stop from Santa Cruz to Kokomo
and back but also staved off Sue's motel blues with her antics and
affection. As you've probably guessed by now, little Helen, now
called Audrey, was adopted by Sue and her husband, Jim, soon after
they returned from their trip. She'll be sharing their home in the
Santa Cruz mountains with another recently adopted young dog, Lizzy,
and two tortoises, Junior and Peggy Sue. Hammer down, little Audrey! |

Annie
Annie went to her new
forever home this weekend. After a very tumultuous start in life,
Annie has ended up with an absolutely amazing family. Lisa, Sean
and their son Ian took to Annie immediately when they met her. Annie
did the same. This family has had a Heeler before so they are very
aware of the personality and traits and just love all they have
to offer. It’s always hard to move our little fosters on to
new homes as we do grow so attached. But families like this make
it easy. She will have an amazing and full life. Lisa says she’s
already found the couch to be very much to her liking, her new toys
are providing entertainment and she slept in Lisa’s bed the
first night. Now that’s a great home! Congratulations Annie. |

Blondie
Little
Ms. Blondie found her forever home today! What a journey she’s
had. Blondie arrived from Mexico, shaggy haired and having had
a rough start in life. She came to us with separation anxiety
and the need for housebreaking and basic training. She was an
older puppy (10-12 months) with lots of energy. Well, needless
to say, we all fell in love with her. This girl has so much confidence
and love for life and, boy, is she smart. Nothing could stop her.
Very quickly we got a behaviorist to help us with her separation
issues. With work, routine and discipline, Blondie quickly showed
us all that she would be okay. She is doing so well! Now she has
her forever home with her amazing mom, Syd. She will share her
house with two other dogs- a Wheaton Terrier and another boy that
looks like he could be Blondie’s twin. And, to top it off,
he was a Mexico dog as well that came her through another rescue
group we work with. What are the odds?
We will miss her but we’re so happy that Blondie has found
her permanent residence.

Fergie
(now Posy)
On May 7, 2006, Posy
( alias Fergie ) moved in with Nancy. Life for Posy has never been
better. We don't know what her life was like in Juarez for her first
4 years but we do know that this adorable little dog is now happy
and in a safe, loving environment. She is Nancy's constant companion.
Nancy's 95-year-old mother insists that Posy come along when her
daughter visits. Posy also goes to play bridge and visits Nancy's
friends. This little white bundle of cuteness has many human and
canine admirers. She does well with Nancy's three cats since she
does not bother them but does love to steal their toys. Nancy writes
that " her favorite toy is one of the cat's soft balls which
she throws in the air all over the living room. Her daily ritual
is to take everything out of her toy basket." Thank you Nancy
for providing such a wonderful home for Posy. |
 |
Iris
Iris found her forever
home very quickly. It was the first call her foster mom got…which
never happens. Jim and Debbie are the perfect match! They had been
looking for just the right dog for almost a year. They knew the
minute they met Iris that she was theirs. Because Iris came from
such a horrible start in her life, we were that much more careful
about the right home. Well, she sure found it! |
 |
Zelda
(nee Maggie)
Nancy adopted Zelda (nee
Maggie) around the end of March, 2006. Zelda goes everywhere with
Nancy, including visiting a convalescent home where she is greeted
with delight by all. When Nancy works at her computer, Zelda curls
up companionably by her feet. There is even a good possibility that
she and Stella, the cat, may become friends at some point.
Thank you, Nancy, for
providing such a welcoming home for Zelda.

Carlos
On Feburary
17th, Carlos went to his new home with Bob and Meg. After only one
week, he has settled in beautifully. He takes his new guardians
on three to four walks a day! He is being showered with love and
attention which this little dog adores. When he isn't out walking
and meeting the neighborhood dogs, he often can be found sitting
on someone's lap. Carlos may only be 12 pounds but he thinks he
is a big dog, says Meg.
Thank you to this wonderful family for adopting this "older"
dog. Carlos' energy and vibrant personality bring joy to his new
household. May you have many wonderful years together.

Precious
Sweet,
socialized and ready to go to a loving home! This attractive,
adolescent girl (she is spayed) loves to play with other dogs
and humans. She was surrendered by her guardian who became homeless
and couldn't care for her.
Precious
is a fine example of what a pit bull mix should be - friendly,
affectionate, loyal, stable, playful, good with other animals
plus she is house trained too! She would do well in a family with
children and other dogs. For further information , please call
Rena at 831-425-0226.

Skyla
Skyla
is a sweet, spayed young adult dog. When she came into the Santa
Cruz County Animal Services as a stray, she tested positive for
heartworm. Since she was deemed to be such a good adoption candidate,
Skyla was treated for her condition. While recovering from her
heartworm treatment, she was fostered by a family with three children
. Her foster mother loved Skyla, who said she fit well into their
life. Skyla loved riding in the car and being included in family
outings and activities. She enjoyed playing with other dogs and
got along with the cats in her foster home. She was very loving
and affectionate towards her foster family. Skyla is back in the
shelter, waiting for her permanent loving home. She has been passed
over because she is a pit bull mix. Rest assured, she is a wonderful,
well-socialized, balanced, loveable, loyal companion animal. For
further information call: Rena at 831-425-0226.

Our sweet
little Heidi found her "forever" home on January 16,
2006. Wes & Penny opened their hearts and home to this special
dog. They say they adore her and she is just perfect for them!!!!
Heidi now has a permanent, loving family for the rest of her life.
We are so thankful for the wonderful people that give these incredible
animals a second chance.

Possum
This sweet, affectionate,
lap dog is a spayed female of about 5 or 6 years old. She
was rescued from the local animal shelter because she was becoming
very stressed in the kennel environment. After just a day or two
in my home, she began to relax, and enjoy her life with three
other dogs and a cat. Possum gets along with everybody. Her specialties
are kissing and lying on her special couch. She does enjoy
her walks and she is leash trained and house trained. Possum
appears to have no bad habits. Although she is a Catahoula Hound
mix, she does not bay or bark very much. She could easily fit
into many kinds of households with or without other pets. She
is particularly fond of children and is calm and trustworthy.
If you might
be interested in giving this fine lady a home, please call Rena
at 831-425-0226.
