The goals of the Center for Animal Protection and Education (CAPE) are to educate people about the plight of animals. In our Foster Care Program, we provide sanctuary for rescued animals who are older, injured or recovering from an illness. Every animal CAPE rescues is placed into a loving home through our Adoption Program. CAPE also sponsors, supports and produces educational programs about issues involving animals.

Forest fires are extremely unpredictable and frightening. On Thursday,May 22nd, Animal Control Services requested that CAPE volunteers come to the county fairgrounds with our truck and horse trailers to assist in the evacuation of dogs, cats, chickens and goats. Despite very smokey conditions and a lot of anxious animal guardians and homeowners, the evacuations that CAPE assisted in proceeded very smoothly because people were prepared. Preparation for disasters is the key to safety and survival. Always include your animals in the plan.

Here are some important questions to assist in making a plan:

  • Do you have a disaster plan?
  • Do you have a plan in place to evacuate all living beings from your house?
  • Where would you meet the rest of your family?
  • Where would you go if you couldn't go home for a month?
  • What if you were unable to leave your home and help was days away?
  • Are you prepared with enough food, water, flashlights and animal food etc.?

  • Some basic things to remember:

  • Always make sure that your animals have proper identification. A collar and ID tag are a must and a microchip is highly recommended.
  • Have an easily accessible kit packed with, towels, medications, litter, and clean-up supplies. Also include a photo of you with each of your animals to identify yourself as the guardian if they are taken to an emergency shelter.
  • Have enough portable crates so that every animal can be safely transported.
  • Have several gallons of bottled water easily accessible.
  • Have 7-20 days of dry food in waterproof containers available.
  • And, of course, make sure all companion animals are spayed or neutered.

CAPE would like to thank all of the volunteers who graciously assisted in the evacuation efforts and also to Animal Control Services for their management of a difficult situation.
